Dye Lab (project-driven class)
Dye lab is an experimental guided dyeing class that allows you to work toward your dream yarn! You come up with a concept that you want to dye-- yarn for a sweater that you want to make, a particular colour effect you want to play with, a colour scheme from a favourite photo-- and I'll help make it happen. Dyeing experience is useful but not necessary, as long as you have a sense of curiosity and are interested in experimenting.
Class includes:
- setting dyeing goals/ choosing your yarn base and dyeing technique(s)
- creating your colours using pre-mixed dye stocks
- dyeing your choice of yarn, in your quantity, using techniques such as immersion, low-water immersion, cake-dyeing for gradients, hand-painting, and more.
Depending on the project and yarn that you've chosen, your yarn may be ready to go home with you at the end of class, or you might need to leave it in the studio for 24 hours for the dye to fix fully. I'll give you a sense of what to expect as part of our pre-class consultation.
Class size: four people maximum
Instructor: Marit Munson. I'm the owner and dyer behind gobsmacked yarn and have been dyeing yarn professionally since 2012. I'm known for my rich colours and one-of-a-kind gradients. I love meeting each student where they are, whether this is your first time dyeing yarn or if you consider your self an old hand at colour mixing. Let's create something together!
Level: Some prior dyeing experience is useful but not necessary.
Class fee: The base price of $60 ($40 instruction fee + $20 materials) includes two hours of instruction and materials for dyeing one skein of merino yarn. Two hours of additional dye time can be added if needed for your project ($20 per hour) and additional yarn is available for purchase (range of $15-25 per skein + tax, depending on yarn base).
Consultation & final invoice: I'll contact you prior to the class with information about the availability and prices of different yarn bases, and to arrange for a consultation about what you'd like to accomplish. I'll provide you with an idea of the final cost at that time. At the end of class, you'll pay in the studio for any dye time and/or yarn costs beyond the base price and will receive a receipt.
Please note: This class involves hot water and electric ranges in a studio without air conditioning. I run a dehumidifier, air purifier, and fans, but conditions in the studio can get quite hot and humid in the summer. If you have concerns about air quality or heat, please email me to discuss details before you register for this class. If temperatures are forecast to be above about 28 C in Sackville on the day of the class, I may need to cancel for safety reasons. If this happens, you may have a full refund OR you may shift your registration to another class in the future.
Cancellation policy: Class fees are refundable (minus a 10% admin. fee) until 24 hours prior to class. No refunds are available within 24 hours of class. (If you are sick, please do not come to class; contact me to make alternate arrangements.)
