Intro to Dyeing class
Learn to dye the sock yarn of your dreams in a creative and supportive setting. No experience necessary-- come and play in the dye pots!
Class includes:
- setting dyeing goals/ choosing your colour scheme
- creating your colours using pre-mixed dye stocks
- low-water immersion dyeing to create complex colour
By the end of class, you'll have a lovely skein of yarn, dyed in the colours you've chosen, freshly rinsed and spun (nearly) dry.
Class size: four people maximum (or 8 max. for group classes scheduled by request)
Instructor: Marit Munson. I'm the owner and dyer behind gobsmacked yarn and have been dyeing yarn professionally since 2012. I'm known for my rich colours and one-of-a-kind gradients. I love meeting each student where they are, whether this is your first time dyeing yarn or if you consider your self an old hand at colour mixing. Let's create something together!
Level: No prior experience necessary; just come with a sense of curiosity and we'll play in the dyepots.
Class fee: $60 ($40 instruction fee + $20 materials) includes instruction and materials for dyeing one skein of sock yarn. If time allows, you may dye an additional skein of yarn ($15/ additional skein). Sock yarn is 80% eco-processed merino (an alternative superwash process) + 20% recycled nylon (338 m/ 370 yds per 100g skein).
You supply:
- If you wish, a pair of dishwashing gloves in your size. These should not be used for anything related to food once you've used them for dyeing. You're welcome to borrow a pair from the studio instead, if you don't mind re-using gloves.
- Work clothes/ old clothes or an apron that you don't mind getting spattered with dye. Some folks are pretty neat when dyeing; others are quite messy. Either way, there's a possibility that your shirt, pants, or shoes could get spattered with dye. For safety, I recommend that you wear close-toed shoes.
Please note: This class involves hot water and electric ranges in a studio without air conditioning. I run a dehumidifier, air purifier, and fans, but conditions in the studio can get quite hot and humid in the summertime. If you have concerns about air quality or heat, please email me to discuss details before you register for this class. If temperatures are forecast to be above about 28 C in Sackville on the day of the class, I may need to cancel for safety reasons. If this happens, you may have a full refund OR you may shift your registration to another class in the future.
Cancellation policy: Class fees are refundable (minus a 10% admin. fee) until 24 hours prior to class. No refunds are available within 24 hours of class. (If you are sick, please do not come to class; contact me to make alternate arrangements.)
