Learn to dye dappled, gobsmacked-style gradient yarn in a creative and supportive setting. No experience necessary-- come and play in the dye pots!

This class covers:

  • choosing your colour scheme
  • creating your colours using pre-mixed dye stocks
  • applying dye to yarn to create dappled gradients
  • skeining and tying your yarn to allow it to dry

You'll be dyeing 100g of superwash merino fingering (365 m/ 395 yd) that has been wound into a yarn cake for you.  After applying the dyes and fixing them in pots on the stovetop, you'll rinse your cake of yarn and skein it out so that it can dry properly-- and so you can see the magic that's happened in the dyepot!  We'll spin your skein dry to remove almost all of the water; you can bring your slightly damp yarn home with you at the end of the class.  If you get really hooked, there should be time for you to dye an additional gradient during class (extra charge per cake).

Class size: four people maximum

Instructor: Marit Munson.  I'm the owner and dyer behind gobsmacked yarn and have been dyeing yarn professionally since 2012.  I'm known for my rich colours and one-of-a-kind gradients. I love meeting each student where they are, whether this is your first time dyeing yarn or if you consider your self an old hand at colour mixing.  Let's create something together!

Level: No experience necessary.

Class fee: $60 ($40 instruction fee + $20 materials) includes instruction, materials for dyeing one skein of yarn.  Additional yarn may be purchased during class ($15/ skein + tax).

Length of class: Two hours

You supply:

  • If you wish, a pair of dishwashing gloves in your size.  These should not be used for anything related to food once you've used them for dyeing.  You're welcome to borrow a pair from the studio instead, if you don't mind re-using gloves.
  • Work clothes/ old clothes or an apron that you don't mind getting spattered with dye. Some folks are pretty neat when dyeing; others are quite messy.  Either way, there's a possibility that your shirt, pants, or shoes could get spattered with dye. For safety, I recommend that you wear close-toed shoes.

Location: gobsmacked yarn, 6 Ford Lane, Sackville, New Brunswick

I run a dehumidifier, air purifier, and fans, but conditions in the studio can get quite hot and humid in the summer. If you have concerns about air quality or heat, please email me to discuss details before you register for this class. If temperatures are forecast to be above about 28 C in Sackville on the day of the class, I may need to cancel for safety reasons. If this happens, you may have a full refund OR you may shift your registration to another class in the future.
